Puppets “Transformation Masks” of the American Northwest Coast Indians are the inspiration for the community based mask making workshops planned at STAR, which serves children and adults with developmental disabilities, and The Norwalk Senior Center, which serves older adults in the mid-Fairfield County Area. A belief exists that the only thing which separates humans and animals (and the spirits that live in them both) is skin. By constructing several separable layers on a mask we express our inner lives and explore our connections to the living world. Beginning with a general introduction to masks, their history and uses, and a show of masks for touch, feel, and inspiration, workshop materials will include clay, preforms, buckram, paper mache and cardboard, plus a variety of decorative materials and found objects. Our goal is to bring the experience of creating an ancient and expressive, as well as very personal art form to an interested group, to facilitate the creation of new expressive works to be worn or displayed. We will exhibit the masks in the annual SoNo Arts Celebration Puppet Parade. Puppet workshops mvbv b v are ongoing. If you are interested in joining the puppet building crew or would like more information on specific workshops, please call (203) 554-3370 and leave your name, telephon number and email address. |
